Remaining Turnabouts

The rest of the turnabouts for allparts of the character are now ready so I can begin modelling the rest of the character and move between different sections.

Jack Frost Modelling Update 5 - Upper Leg (Thigh)

I finished the upper leg section which I will refine and edit further when I add it to the lower half of the model but I will progress on now.

I had a chat with Phil and he suggested to get all turnabouts for each section finished first so that I could work on each section simultaneously to help me finish the modelling stage quicker. Therefore I will try this strategy and hopefully at least get a complete model for the crit.

Upper Leg Turnabouts

Progressing further to the next part of the leg, I have produced turnabouts for the upper section. I included the knee pads to show roughly where they would connect up and how much would be covered. This will be useful later when attaching the lower and upper leg parts together.

Jack Frost Modelling Update 4 - Lower Leg

I have gone foward and modelled the lower leg (ankle - knee) and I reduced and rounded the geomentry as I modelled and will leave this and move onto the upper leg.

Lower Leg Turnabouts

Progressing to next section of the ankle to the knee.

Jack Frost Modelling Update 3 - Refining Shoes

I have worked back into the shape as certain views felt blocky so have made them appear more rounded, etc and I have really tried to reduce the number of polygon faces so I think I will leave this for now and move onto the ankle as I need to move forward and model this character.

Jack Frost Modelling Update 2 - Shoes Mk 2

I have fixed the shapes together and reduced the geometry down as I realised I had way to much for just the shoes. I have also smoothed the normals and set the edges to finish them.

Jack Frost Modelling Update 1

I have decided to make the shoe forming individual pieces so divided up the different shapes, similarly to how I formed the silhouettes.

I am currently working on combining the shapes together and will smooth the normals, etc.

Research Framing Practise Lecture 6 Notes

Critical Ideas

  •  semiotics, anthropology and Ideology
could come from reviews of sources - exhibitions, films, etc
  • Three general theories include - Marxism, Feminism, Psychoanalysis
  • critical ideas that step outside the 'self'
  • Three different signs - Symbol, Icon and Index (used a lot in film theory)
  • Daniel Chandler - beginners guide to semiotics - key words to analyse source, image, etc
  •
    Denotation and Connotation

  •  Denoted - what it shows
  • Connotated - suggests what character, narrative, etc is
  • what it implies about conventions, 'naturalised ideas'

  • Roland Barth - connotation is conventional to how the natural theories work
  • e.g. rose handed to boy or girl = connotes
  • romance and should ideally be conducted - one of our societies dominant ideologies
  • mysterious operation by which the message may infuse a secondary meaning
  • changing style or tone may involve different connotations

  • The Commutation Test - particular signifier is selected then different alternatives are considered - considered in how this affects the sense of the sign
  • 'absenses' - why one paradigm than the other e.g. old instead of young
  • also known as 'subsitution test'

  • 'Dirt' is matter out of place
  • Mary Douglas 'purity and danger'
  • ambiguity - doubtfullness, uncertainty
  • anolmaly - deviation from common rule, type, arrangement or form, old, perculiar - something that doesn't fit

How to deal with Anomolies

  1. assign into category
  2. destroy it
  3. rules of advoidance
  4. declare it as dangerious

Marxism

  •  Marxism - analyse of power relations
  • transformation
  • experience ourselves as possessing conciousness to freely form our own ideas
  • but based on imagery and ideoligical once based on misrecognition
  • identity formed ideologically - your hailed/ called
  • interpellation - when best to not know what's going on

Hegemony

  •  different marxist's theory
  • cultural domination happens by common sense
  • subject has power to promote difference
  • different to top down theories

  • subculture can resist dominant ideologies
  • intellectual and cultural production of counter hagemonic ideas
  • minorities that decode dominate messages
  • about creation of ideas through common sense
  • ideology - opposition to mainstream
  • hagemony = power that is taking away

Shoe Turnabouts 2

This time they are line drawn and tried to correct shapes to what I modelled to get a better perspective and to original concept. I will reattempt the shoe model tomorrow and see what happens.

Modelling Jack Frost's Shoes Mk1

I am not that happy with this attempt as the turnarounds are confusing because of the blocked in feel but I figured out some problems with the front view and corrected that. I will produce line versions of shoe turnabouts and try to make distinctions of the heel, toe cap, etc a bit more clearer so that I can adjust this model better.

Working into character Components1 - Feet

After talking to Alan, he suggested to work on individual components instead of trying to produce full turnarounds, so I started with the shoes where I worked back into the side view and made decisions of how the foot/ boot will look like. The front I based on an existing image where I worked in to fit the shape I wanted. Also I added some texture according to more of Alan's advice (to go back to references) and used them to overlay where I wanted it to.

I am going to attempt to model the feet next as I am aware now that I'm running out of time and will help me to realize how the thing might look overall.
