Development of Final Portrait

Basic Background

Grey Silhoutte

Black and white toning

Basic Colours

More colour depth

Highlights and texturing, improvements

Digital Portrait complete

Final digital portrait of hybrid

This is my final piece finally completed I spent more time on the actual concept of the creature than the background which is shown clearly in this image.  I like the textures I managed to gain  because it has really given depth to the creature, I also like the tones and highlights for this purpose.  My problems with this image is that the background looks rushed and some of the angle positions are not exactly correct. Overall I am pleased with this image because it is a huge improvement to the work I was creating in the beginning photoshop tutorials.

Life Drawing week 5

In this session I had to produce one sustained drawing using vertical and horizontal measuring methods to get the perspective right. This involved a lot of changing and redrawing. There was also a skeleton next to the model and I attempted to fit that into the drawing to challenge myself to draw another form. I tried to recreate the drawing getting all angles and perspectives right but I could keep making changes and improving it.

Experimenting with photoshop 3

I felt I needed practice with my idea's new pose and saving the development stages so I quickly produced this experiment. It is basic but I like how the form is looking, I will revert back to the drawn idea as the anatomy looks better. I now feel more confident starting my final piece.

Resolved final idea

I have improved the design of the head and added arms and hands in two different ways. The top image is about how the feathers could morph into the wing, I think this looks very awkward and out of place. However the idea below it I have included the arm and hand to fit to the wing better and looks like it belongs in the anatomy. I think I will use the below idea for my final piece as this design has the best concept from others I have drawn.

Head studies - Transformation in a vulture

I was given more advice to rethink the design of the head through a series of studies that focus on the different stages of transforming into the hybrid. I tried to show how the shape of the face and neck transforms, how the beak gradually grows out, how the ears disappear and how the graduation of the wrinkles becomes greater. These sketches helped me identify the potiential of the head and neck shape towards the end of the transformation and will combine both when designing the resolved final idea.

More structure to final idea

I looked at the comment I received about the idea not having much structure so I refered back to the skeletons and using these images as a template, I drew my final idea on top to get the right anatomy. I think these two ideas look a lot better than the previous idea and turnabouts because it captures that proud bird of prey pose to stand up tall and weight is distributed onto it's weight rather than the whole body flopping over.

Final idea

Left angle

Left Side

Front

Right angle

Back

I finally decided on a final idea and pose for the hybrid and I created these turnabouts to see what angle and pose I wanted. I haven't got the perspective right in some of the sketches but I was concerntrating more on the concept and how it would look. I chose the right angle view because I think it is more dynamic and you can see a good anatomical structure. I erased the teeth because they made no sense in the splice but I am happy with my choice and will make a few twicks in the process of creating my final piece.

Vulture Head studies

I produced these vulture head sketches because I was struggling with the shape of the head, neck and shoulders in my hybrid so felt I needed to practice drawing the form looking at the images I gathered for research. I used biro to give a bold sharp detail into the drawing, these studies will help me because instead of drawing what I think I know I can refer to this to get the anatomy structure right.

Idea Development

In these ideas I have selected the best qualities from previous ideas and mashed them together into these four ideas. I prefer idea two and I will take that further in my final ideas. I incoporated more features of me so that there is a connection of human qualities instead of being just bird - like.

Developing a photoshop experiment further

I tried to improve the features of the anatomy of the beak, neck, head and wings. I used the rubber tool to shape the form to make it more vulture - like. However the neck is too long and the wings needs to be higher and this will be addressed in the final outcome. I also thought about texturing as I was in the photoshop session and learnt how to create brushes for the wrinkles and feathers, this will be much easier than trying to draw it in individually. I will use the texturing skills I learnt on the final outcome as it is hard to see in places of the experiment.

Life Drawing week 4

In this session I created two detailed sketches for thirty minutes, we had to use the measuring system with a pencil and my thumb and translated that to the page. I drew a line in the middle and measured equal lines to get the figure in proportion. I think I am getting better with the figure but I am still struggling with the ankles and feet but I am improving with every session.

This was a five minute pose and the model was lying down, I found this pose trickier because the figure is at a different angle so that I had to try and incoporate what I saw through foreshortening. I tried to complete the full figure but I didn't have much time to finish the tone detail.

This piece was a series of one minute poses, I had to work quick and instinctively through the expressive use of line. Even though I only managed to draw the silhoutte it shows action to the pose. I need to learn how to record more into the drawing quickly to meet the time limit.
