First thumbnail drawings

The scenes I have chosen from the extracts are:
1 - Volcanic cave
2 - Mushroom forest
3 - Sea scape

I started sketching these beginning thumbnails to start thinking about what I want in my concepts, the scale of the elements and lighting. From this selection I feel one or two ideas have potiential but it is far from how I want to envision them so I will refer more closely to the research I have begun gathering to generate further ideas.

1,2 and 3 point perspective

I have started looking at online tutorials to begin practising 1 - 3 point perspective, I found them on Youtube and followed step by step to end up with these finished images. The two point pespective drawing is the strongest because you can see how the image forshortens as it moves closer to the focal points. I left the guide lines on the top two one point perspectives to show how I setted the shapes into place.

Research from internet

These images are just concept artworks. I like the image below and how rocks could look like a form we are familiar with in this case dragons, it gives the formations an alternative meaning as a description of the space of the valley space. This could make my concepts more interesting because the viewer can look for the hidden meaning within them.

A concept for the game Mirror's Edge, a typical city but because the perspective view is different when playing this game you can see higher view points. You can also interact with the environment in this game so it is not also about looking but how you can use it to reach other buildings.

More artwork concepts, cave and valley environments they may be useful for my environments as the srtuctures are good, look architectural. The idea of a civilization beneath the Earth.

Concepts from original Star Wars movie, reflects how many enviroments have been used such as barren wastelands to forests describe the climate and culture of the population that lives there.

The cave from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, I like the use of lighting to describe how dark the space is and how only the focal point is seen clearly in the image.

Concepts from Tomb Raider UnderWorld, famous for it's ancient aztec architecture in amongst open areas such as the jungle and the sea. There is a lot of detail and subtle lighting techniques that make these images effective.

War of the Worlds concept, I chose this because the characters scale suggest they are bigger than the environment, they over power it. The fire relates back to the volcanic theme of the concepts I am hoping to create, although this is more of a fire storm than lava so will refer to other images.

I used the given websites in the brief and found some of my own to find these interesting concepts, I selected the images I felt were more powerful and visually strong.

The Art of Lord of the Rings The Two Towers

This is an early pencil sketch of the black gate at the Entrance of Mordor, I felt the idea of designing different sections on different pieces of paper and then bringing it all together at the end is a good designing technique and I could approach my concepts in this way.

These are concepts of the dead Marshes and Fangoon Forest. The enchanting space is what drew me in, I like that elements of the environments are hidden at first so there is more behind the image. I will need to think about this in my concepts because I could reveal part of what the space/environment but also include that hidden layer.

This a cave environment I found in the book, I like the look of the rock formation and structure. The use of staglatites makes the space feel more closed in and the character's are constricted with the height of the environment. These formations could be useful for my own cave and cliff environments described in the extracts.

These are concepts of Isengard and has a lot of ideas for structure inside the tower with the ridged layers of stone. The pit is more effective because it creates the impression that it is never ending below the world's surface. The small wooden bridges and platforms describe how fragile and dangerious this environment is. It is the basic idea of how I want the volcanic cave concept to look that it plunges deep within the earth, never ending.

These Concepts of Rivendale are more calm and peaceful in comparison to the isengard concepts. The space is naturally including trees and waterfalls. The architecture has an old gothic feel similar to a cathedral. The research came from a book from the library called 'The Art of Lord of the Rings The Two Towers', I chose this film because silmilar to the project brief, this is has also been based on an original book, so there was a design team trying to envision J.R.Tolken's original ideas for the fantasy creatures and environments described in the book.

This would be a good source to talk about in my essay because the director and designers went through a similar process of looking at an original book source and then adapting these ideas into a film making them more current and suited to the present audience. There are also a lot of scenes and characters used within the design and pre production of the film so I could talk about the views and the journey they took to make these elements realistic within the genre and the idea of the original book.

The Art of Star Trek

These are the concepts of the ships and what they look like on the exterior and in the interior, I like the impressive organic machine look in these designs and is what orignally drew me to the film. I feel this research also has potiential for my essay because I could also look at the historical context of the original tv production how technology advanced and link together.

This concept of the Star Fleet acemedy reminded me of similar architecture that you would see in London such as the O2 Arena because it sticks out for it's unsual shape. I like the structure of this building because it is very contemporary and has features of a space ship.

These are concepts of the planet Vulcan and it's destruction and similar to the Mustafar concepts in Star Wars, it is very rocky and volcanic. I prefer the structure of the rock formation in the second image because there layers of detail and look like it belongs on another planet. There is alot of inspiration I can take from these ideas for my environments. The research came from a book in the library called 'The art of Star Trek'.

Art of Star Wars episode 3

These above images are concepts for the planet Corrusant, I like the organic buildings and use of multiple glass windows as it creates the illusion of a entertainment city centre with a lot of life happening within. The towers and offices look really alien - like with alien energy pulse in the centre, the use of characters gives us an idea of the overall scale and how populated the environment is.

These concepts are of felicia which is an organic space jungle, I specificly like the above of the three images because the plants remind me of toadstools/mushrooms that is relevant to my concept. It also helps me think about colour scheme because here they have earth reds, brown and green to define the plant forms and the jungle space around it.

These are concepts for Mustafar the volcanic planet in the film this is also relates to one of my extracts because the scene is dark illuminated by the reflection of the lava, with strange cave rock formations surrounding it. I really like the third image with the lava spewing up and the thin rock bridge because the potiential ideas could fit into my environment. Using less amount of light sets the tone and describes how the environment is illuminated by fire.

This is a concept for Utapah, a planet of cliffs and bridges, I liked this one in particular because all the bridges meet up to one specific point, the idea of multiple possiblities. I also like the stagalitites forming underneath because you can understand the structure and rock form better. this image also feels cave - like so might be useful to inspire my environments.

This research came from a book from the library titled 'The Art of Star Wars Episode 3' and could be used in my essay because I have to look at preproduction of a film/game and there is a lot of sources used on the environment, characters and stage design so there would be a lot to include and talk about.
